BGT Finalist tells us about her charity work

Gabz
Gabz

Gabz is a Stevenage born singer/songwriter, multi instrumentalist and rapper known for her official UK top 10 hit ‘Lighters (The One)’ and reaching the final of Britain’s Got Talent 2013 at the tender age of 14.

Whilst music and her education are her main focus she always tries to help charities when she can and has a strong passion for helping others and to be a good role model for the youth of today.

Since Gabz performed on the final of Britain’s Got Talent she has been actively involved in helping raise funds through performances and visits for a number of UK charities.

One of the charities she is supporting is the Letchworth based charity ‘Jackie’s Drop In’ (http://www.jackiesdropin.org.uk/) which is a unique centre for adults with disabilities. Gabz explains “I first met founder Jackie and her team when we won awards at the Comet Community Awards in 2014 when her charity was recognized for the great work it does for the local community.”

“I then visited the centre, performing acoustically for everyone there and meeting and chatting with the members and staff and it was a really humbling experience.” After a great reception from all the members Gabz returned to perform at their fun day to raise funds for a new centre that is greatly needed to expand the services they can offer its members. She continues to go to their functions and is planning on visiting again as soon as they have moved to their new building, which they hope to do shortly.

“Although I don’t have a lot of free time due to my school work and music commitments I still try to make time to perform at charitable events as I realise how lucky I am. Jackie’s Drop In has a special place in my heart, they are a local self-funded charity that do amazing things & I have had the privilege of seeing this first hand. I will continue to support the charity and hope to help raise awareness and funds in any way I can.”

Zoe, Jackie’s daughter who also helps run the charity says “We would like to say how much we appreciate all of the support that Gabz has given to us at Jackie’s Drop-In. Since our meeting at the Comet Community Awards in 2014 Gabz has performed at all our events. It’s a comfort to know that Gabz looks at us as her local Charity and continues to support us in all our ventures.”

Gabz has also been involved with St Luke’s School in Redbourn which a school for pupils with learning difficulties. She recalls, “I especially enjoyed judging and performing at their talent show; it was great to see their enthusiasm for performing and all the hard work they put in. Despite their personal challenges they put on a great show and really enjoyed themselves – it was lovely to see so many smiling faces.”

Other charitable events that Gabz has helped include: One ‘Step at a Time’ (http://www.onestepatatime.me.uk/) which is a charity that creates a small friendly network for families with special needs children, ‘The Wings of Hope’ (http://www.thewingsofhope.org/) which provide education and support for underprivileged children in India and Malawi as well as developing the skills and talents of students in the UK and ‘The Diana Awards’ (http://diana-award.org.uk/) whose mission is to inspire and recognise social action in young people.
