The Super Secret Diary of Holly Hopkinson: This is going to be a fiasco! is a major new middle grade novel by author Charlie P. Brooks, making his debut in children’s books in partnership with illustrator Katy Riddell. Told in a gloriously illustrated diary-form, the hilarious series is brought to life with delightful drawings throughout from the ambitious and irrepressible Holly, via the pen of Katy!

The hardback, paperback and audio book, read by the multi-talented and award-winning Claudia Winkleman, were published simultaneously on the 29th April 2021.

A charming domestic comedy, with a dash of magic, and the occasional moment of mayhem! These are the memoirs of ME, Holly Hopkinson, aged almost ten, except without any of the rubbish adults usually put in, thank you very much. My dad just lost his job, which means me and the rest of my family have to leave London and move to the middle of nowhere, which is a TOTAL DISASTER! There’s no Wi-Fi, the local kids are FERAL and there’s animal poo EVERYWHERE. But then for my birthday, my eccentric aunt gave me a magic pocket watch, which I can use to hypnotise and CONTROL people. I actually wanted a new phone, but I won’t complain because this new power is REALLY FUN and has led to the MOST unexpected things – including a visit to the QUEEN.

Maybe the countryside isn’t so bad after all….

Charlie Brooks is a racehorse trainer, farmer, newspaper columnist and former jockey, as well as the author of two crime novels for adults.

Regarding his new children’s book, Charlie Brooks said: 'The encouragement and guidance from the amazing team at HarperCollins combined with Katy's natural talent and enthusiasm has made the development of Holly's diaries the most joyous experience. But nothing is possible without inspiration which comes from my riotous seven – year - old daughter and the hilarious adventures on our bucolic yet chaotic farmyard.'

Katy Riddell was obsessed with drawing from a young age and plenty of encouragement from her parents, both artists and illustrators, led her to spend hours writing and illustrating her own stories. She studied Illustration and Animation at Manchester Metropolitan University, graduating in 2016, and has now made illustration her career.

Katy Riddell said: ’Charlie’s characters and sense of comedy are a real gift for any illustrator. I am having enormous fun bringing his world to life.’

Claudia Winkleman is a broadcaster, presenter and now author. She is most recognised for co-hosting Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1) alongside Tess Daly and has recently taken over Saturday mornings on Radio 2. Claudia Winkleman said: ‘As soon as I read Holly Hopkinson, I thought to myself how much sass and confidence Holly brought to the table. Her family take on a new chapter in their lives which is wholesome and exciting, with quick wit and hilarious quips all in one setting. I'm thrilled to have been involved in bringing Holly's voice to life for the audiobook.'
