Sinéad O'Connor is mourning the death of her teenage son after he went missing last week, the tragic news follows reports of the singer struggling with mental health.

The 55-year-old performer paid tribute to Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor on Twitter posting the message: "May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace."

Shane was 17 when his body was found after his disappearance.

Sinead’s mental illness battles can be traced back to her childhood when she suffered “extreme and violent abuse, both emotional and physical" by her mother.

In October 2007 she went public with her bipolar disorder during an interview with Oprah Winfrey following a suicide attempt on her 33rd birthday on December 8 1999.

Sinéad has also used social media platforms to express her emotions when experiencing suicidal thoughts which sparked such a high level of concern police were eventually called to her home.

O’Connor, who has also been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, later admitted her posts were a “cry for help”.

In 2021 Sinead postponed a series of gigs so she could complete a rehabilitation programme and concentrate on her wellbeing.

At the time she tweeted: "If I take this time to heal, I will be fit for a lifetime of touring. If I don't, I won't.

"The child is thriving now thank god but the mom needs TLC,” Sinead added she was about to take a break for a '"one-year trauma and addiction treatment program".

O’Connor also admitted drug abuse following the death of a close friend saying: "This year I lost someone beloved and has affected me so badly that I became briefly addicted to a drug other than weed.

"I had a very traumatic six years and this year was the end of it but now recovery starts."

This year has seen another tragedy in Sinead’s life after the body of her 17-year-old son Shane was found on Saturday January 8.

A police spokesperson confirmed the news at the weekend saying: "Following the recovery of a body in the Bray area of Wicklow on Friday, 7th January 2022, a Missing Person Appeal in respect of Shane O'Connor, 17 years, has been stood down.”

Sinéad confirmed her son’s suicide on Twitter saying: "My beautiful son, Nevi’im Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God.

"May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace."

Sinead O’Connor’s real name is Shuhada Sadaqat.
