Corrie Star admits he is deaf

Listen up Corrie Fans one of your heroes has just revealed that he is partially deaf. If you have ever met actor William Roache, who plays Ken Barlow in the soap, and have tried to have a conversation with him only to find that he walks away from you, don't be offended. As the actor explains it has happened in the past...

'I walk past people who have said something and I won't hear it, it gives the appearance of being arrogant which I like to think I am not.'

The disability exploded back to his early twenties when Roache was a solider, he lost a percentage of his hearing in a bomb blast during an army training exercise.

His hearing gradually became worse although up until now Roach has 'kept quiet' about it. Roach said in a recent interview, which was probably conducted with the assisant of a megaphone...

'People don't know I have got a hearing problem. Deafness is extremely isolating. I live in a cocooned world.

'I could be having a normal conversation and certain things I just won't hear. I can't hear watches or alarms, footsteps or the rustling of paper.

'The floor manager has to give me a visual cue, a hand signal, and it is just something that I have learned to live with. I have put up with it all these years.'
