Jada-Smith praised after Rock mocks her at Oscars
Jada Pinkett-Smith has received messages of support after she was the butt of a controversial joke made by Oscar host Chris Rock last night before her husband slapped him on stage.
Rock mocked the 50-year-old actress by saying he 'can't wait for G.I. Jane 2,’ in reference to Smith’s hair condition comparing her to Demi Moore’s character in the 1997 movie, G.I. Jane.
Pinkett-Smith rolled her eyes at the comment, but her husband and film legend, Will, took offence and stormed the stage to slap the host before returning to his seat shouting 'Keep my wife's name out your fucking mouth.'
The actress went public with her alopecia in 2018, it is not known if Rock was aware of the actress’ condition.
Her response to Rock’s comment was praised by people on social media, one reply said: 'Jada is the only person who came out of this with any dignity.'
Another read: 'Thinking about Jada Pinkett Smith and all she's having to endure tonight and probably every other night this week.
'She doesn't deserve any of what she's going to be dealing with and there's a grace and dignity that will be expected of her that is absolutely unfair.'
A third reply said: 'Jada always strikes me as an intelligent, articulate woman who I'm sure would have found a dignified way to defend herself later, this is an absolute disgrace!
'If it were me I'd be more embarrassed by my husbands behavior than a GI Jane joke.'
Will Smith made an apology when he accepted his award for his leading role in King Richard.
'I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment,' he said.
'Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father. But love will make you do crazy things.'
Rock has not filed for assault following last night’s incident, but the LAPD has said they will launch an inquest if he wishes to do so.
In a statement the Los Angeles Police Department said: 'LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. 'The incident involved one individual slapping another.'
After Will Smith won Best Actor he was spotted kissing Jada before the couple attended the Vanity Fair after party.
