A dog lover from Turkey has dedicated the last four years to rescuing and caring for paralysed canines which have been abandoned and abused through her non-profit association.

Around 560 dogs have had their lives saved thanks to Paws Holding on to Life, most of the animals are disabled because of their past owners.

Özgünlü told The DoDo: “They were all rescued.

“The majority of them are paralyzed. Some have been shot, beaten, abandoned. All of them have a past.”

She knows only too well how challenging it is for humans living with a disability, let alone helpless animals who do not have a voice.

“Since my father is disabled, I give more priority to disabled dogs,” Özgünlü explained. “They need us more. I try to take care of them as much as possible.”

Paws Holding, at Life Association’s countryside sanctuary has acres of land for the dogs to run free, but this year the land has a brand new attraction.

By connecting some barrels with wheels together Özgünlü has built a “dog train, so the four-legged residents can travel in style.

“I’d actually been thinking about doing such a project for a long time,” Özgünlü said. “I was very happy that I did.”

The train attracts attention from the locals who always have smiles on their faces when the carriages whizz past them in the street.

“Many people like it, and it makes me even happier,” Özgünlü said.
