An A to Z glossary of disabilities A serious viral infection which used to be lethal, but can now be prevented with a vaccination. Up to 1 in 100 people still attract the illness which can be life-threatening. There hasn’t been a recorded case of polio in the UK since 1984 thanks to the vaccine which was introduced back in the mid-1950s. Although there is a still a risk the disease may return, so its important young babies receive the vaccination. Those suffering from Polio may have aching muscles, headaches, sore throat, sickness, abdominal pain and a high temperature.
