An A to Z glossary of disabilities

Hydrocephalus used to be referred to as ‘water on the brain’ although the description was misleading as the brain isn’t surrounded by water – the liquid is called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

CSF protects the brain from damage, provides nutrients allowing the brain to function properly and removes waste products.

In Hydrocephalus the brain develops excess CSF which can cause sickness, problems with walking, blurred vision and headaches.

The condition can usually be treated with the insertion of a tube (shunt) implanted into the brain which absorbs the unwanted CSF.
