Gestational diabetes affects pregnant women when there is too much glucose in the blood. Usually blood levels are controlled by insulin, but when a women is expecting they can produce higher amounts of glucose which is difficult to keep at a stable level. Women with gestational diabetes are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, this occurs when the body is unable to produce a sufficient amount of insulin.
