An A to Z glossary of disabilities

Guillain-Barré syndrome can develop very quickly over a few hours. Initial symptoms include a sore throat, a cold or an infection of the stomach and large intestine known as gastroenteritis.

Symptoms usually start in the feet and hands before spreading to the arms and legs resulting to pains, numbness, co-ordination problems and progressive muscle weakness.

In severe cases the condition can affect eye sight problems, speech impediments, difficulty chewing or swallowing, temporary paralysis of legs, face, arms and respiratory muscles, bladder problems and irregular heart rates or blood pressure levels.
