Despite being a historic building most of Highclere Castle is accessible for visitors with a disability.

There aren’t any lifts to take you up to the upper level, although if you can’t manage the steps there are photographic albums which show a selection of bedrooms situated on the first floor.

Wheelchair users can access the castle and the Egyptian Exhibition via the Courtyard located at the back of the castle.

Motorised wheelchairs are not permitted inside the castle, but you can use them on the paths around the grounds.

There are a limited number of manual wheelchairs which can be loaned for the duration of your visit. You are advised to pre-book one of these ahead of your trip by calling 01635 253210 or email

As well as being the location of Downton Abbey Highclere Castle is also private family home of the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon.
