Drivers fined £500 for misusing disabled bays

We all know parking fines can be a bit steep, but a driver from Cardiff certainly learnt her lesson misusing an accessible bay.

The woman was slapped with a £500 penalty being one of nine culprits taking up spaces reserved for disabled people mounting to a collective sum of £4,087.

All of the shamed drivers were fined by Cardiff council on June 18 with a court document stating: "At that time there was displayed on the motor vehicle a badge of a form prescribed under section 21 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970 and you were using the vehicle in circumstances where a disabled person's concession would have been available to a disabled person's vehicle."

The following list of the drivers who pleaded guilty or were proven guilty was published on Wales Online:

A 57-year-old woman from Merthyr Tydfil was fined £40 and ordered to pay a total of £374 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on February 16, 2021.

A 69-year-old man from Penylan was fined £40 and ordered to pay a total of £374 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on February 23, 2021.

A 84-year-old man from Rumney was fined £170 and ordered to pay a total of £504 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on November 28, 2020.

A woman from Ely was fined £220 and ordered to pay a total of £554 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on January 12, 2021.

A 48-year-old man from Cathays was fined £40 and ordered to pay a total of £174 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on December 12, 2020. A 67-year-old woman from Swanbridge was fined £92 and ordered to pay a total of £426 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on December 19, 2020.

A 20-year-old man from Canton was fined £107 and ordered to pay a total of £441 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on December 15, 2020.

A man from Roath was fined £40 and ordered to pay a total of £374 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on December 19, 2020.

A 60-year-old woman from Thornhill was fined £122 and ordered to pay a total of £456 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on November 21, 2020

A 42-year-old woman from Pentwyn was fined £76 and ordered to pay a total of £410 for unlawfully using a disabled person's badge in relation to the parking of a vehicle on November 21, 2020.

An ABLE2UK poll showed 70 per cent of you felt the fine should be more than £500, 15 per cent thought lower and 15 per cent were undecided.
