The Under 18 squad from Fulham FC Academy took on the Fulham FC Foundation’s Badgers earlier this month ahead of World Down's Syndrome Day, March 21st.

Since forming in 2005 the Fulham Badgers, a team formed of players with Downs Syndrome, have formed a great relationship with Fulham FC’s training ground making use of the facilities and representing the Club at a number of tournaments and events.

Ahead of the annual fixture, Fulham FC Academy players participated in an educational session with Fulham FC Foundation DisAbility Development Manager, Katy Shephard.

The ‘goal’ was to raise awareness about Down’s Syndrome with young footballers, teach them how to engage with people living with the condition and highlight the abilities of the Fulham Badgers players.

At full time the Badgers scored a victory over the Academy team, who took their defeat in high spirits.

Ben, who was in goal for Fulham Badgers, said: “Really exciting, enjoyed it loads! The Academy boys are very good, and nice and friendly. I look forward to this game every year!”

Brian, a dad of one of the Badgers players, said: “The Fulham Badgers really enjoyed their annual match with the future stars from the Academy. It was great to see how well all of the Badgers played and how the Academy boys adapted to their opponents. As parents we truly appreciate the boys from the Academy giving up their time to provide the Badgers with such a good experience. The smiles on all of the faces show how much everybody enjoyed the evening.”

One of the Fulham U18s players, Samuel Tabares, said: “Playing against the Badgers was an amazing experience for myself, everyone made us feel welcome and included. I learnt from the event how football is a game for everyone no matter what their background is. The key parts of the event that made me enjoy it was the celebrations shown by the Badgers!”
