The Stand Up Wheelchair
Let’s face it. The worse thing about being in a wheelchair is that you are stuck on your butt all day…Wouldn’t it be great if you could stand up?
If that prospect sounds promising you should check out Quality Of Life with Locomotion – or ‘Qolo’ for short.
It’s a new design in wheelchair technology, thanks to its mobile exoskeleton the device gives users the option to stand or sit as they control the chair by their upper body and can be operated hands-free.
Kenji Suzuki, from Team Qolo, said “Our device gives users the choice to sit or stand, using cutting edge technologies. This means that wheelchair users can interact with other people at the same eye-level, improving communication and changing the way they see the world.”
The Qolo is one of the five finalists announced for the $4 million Toyota Mobility Challenge which supports “radical improvements in the mobility and independence of people with lower-limb paralysis through smarter assistive technology.”
The winner of the Mobility Challenge will be announced in September 2019.
Team Qolo is from the university of Tsukuba, Japan.
