Here's the good news, over the past few years thousands of pounds have been put into public buildings, such as cinemas and bars to make them accessible to disabled people. The bad news however is that a high percentage of people with disability can't get there! The problem lies with the government and public transport. 6 out of 10 disabled people have had to reject jobs on the basis that they simply can't use transport to get there. The finding came from a recent survey carried out by the charity, Leonard Cheshire. A further 9 out of ten visually sighted people also had the same difficulty. The government are being slack at producing their long-awaited plans to force public transport services such as taxis, buses and trains to have adaptations for disabled passengers.

At the beginning of the year the government promised to publish a disabled bill before the end of the year. So far they have covered bills including ones which enables disabled people find jobs. Although campaigners are arguing that transport Accessibility is just as important and The Disability Rights Commission are asking for the plans to be announced in next months' queens speech.

Leonard Cheshire's head of policy, John Knight commented, "Adequate
transport is at the heart of people being able to participate in our
society at every level. We need to break this vicious cycle of inaccessibility. It makes no sense that places like the cinema or workplace have to be fully accessible by law if disabled people can't get there in the first place. We're asking the government to stop delaying and to introduce the promised disability bill, addressing the transport gap as a priority."
