ROGER DALTREY CHATS TO ABLE2 We catch an exclusive chat with The Who frontman. Published: 30th March 2010 Take a sneaky peek inside Roger Daltrey's diary this month and you will see that the bloke has been bloody busy recently. Roger is the patron saint of The Teenage Cancer Trust, a charity which aim is to give youngsters coping with the illness the very best chance of survival and over the next nine days Roger is behind a series of concerts at The Royal Albert Hall which will raise money for the fantastic cause. The charity itself is celebrating its tenth anniversary and Roger has a very special treat in store for the final night as he will be playing the Quadrophenia soundtrack in full with The Who although the grueling rehearsals will take its toll on Roger's voice. The 66 year old will be forced to rest his vocal chords over the next couple of days meaning that he will be absence a few nights from the concerts. Before his voice packs in we manage to grab a few minutes with the star backstage at the Royal Albert Hall to find out more about the trust. Roger tells us that ten years ago his aim was to build twelve new wards to accommodate teenagers with Cancer. At the start things weren't going to plan and the two wards which were functioning back then faced closure. Thanks to the incredible support the charity has given, ten wards are now available across the UK, leaving just two more to be build so the charity can reach its target. So with the ambitious achievement finally in sight, what's next for Roger? "I am going to America next to start the charity up over there", he tells us. Another question we pose to Mr. Daltrey is if he thinks he thinks the concerts will carry on for another ten years? "I dunno" replies Roger, "In ten years time I’ll be nearly eighty!" The concerts at the Albert Hall have another two years ahead of them until the charity's contract runs out, but as Roger reminds us each ward will still need funding to ensure they are maintained. It seems as if Roger's diaries will be busy for the next few years as well! |
