LEGLESS & PENNILESS. Soilder looses his disabilty benefit. Published: 26th July 2010 Back in 2007 Private Aron Shelton found himself fighting behind enemy lines in Afghanistan, although the courageous solder’s life was about to shattered thanks to a fatal explosive which took the life of one of his best buddies and Aron's left leg. Instead of signing up for a sequel to 'My Left Foot' Aron 'hopped' back to his home town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire to spend time with his fiancée Callan. Over the past three years Aron has had to learn how to walk again. Vigorous exercises using the muscles on his buttock and hip have eventually allowed the ex-solider steadily retreat back to an ordinary if not gruelling day-to-day life. After waking up in the mornings the next five minutes sees Aron, 26, attach his prosthetic leg, an aid which has made life just that bit easier allowing him to limp up to 400 metres. The calculated distance means one of two things, he's a lot more independent compared to when he saw his left leg blast off to oblivion and also the loss of his £180 - a month disability allowance! Yes, that's right - the Government have taken away his allowance because Aron has battled against all odds and learnt to walk 400 metres with a piece of metal where his left leg used to be! "I managed to walk 400 metres off my own back. It took sheer guts and determination. "Because I can walk that distance and was honest enough to tell them, the benefit is being taken away from me and with it my means of getting around." Aron said. A cold-hearted idiot from the Department for Work and Pensions said: "Issues such as this one are why we are making changes to the way we assess eligibility to DLA. We want to introduce a new, more objective assessment to ensure the system is fairer and targets those most in need. "We can't talk about individual cases, but if a someone feels that a decision is wrong they can get in touch with us and we will look at again. Disability Living Allowance isn't paid based on the condition someone has, but on the extra costs they may have because of their specific needs or difficulties." Next time we hear our pathetic Prime Minister harp on about how proud he is with the British troops it will make our toes curl and probably the five Aron has left! |
