Q AWARDS 2006 - PARTY

Back in 2002 we met him backstage at the BRIT Awards, he had just won an award and was in incredibly high spirits. Having a steady stream of releases entering the charts at substantial topping numbers Jay Kay from Jamiroquai had awards thrown at him left, right and center. When the BRITS show ended Jay Kay attended his record label's party, it was here in the early hours where he punched a photographer who tried to snap him walking out the club. The incident found itself on the front page of the tabloids the following morning and Jay Kay's publicity was starting to crumble.

It's 6.30pm in Paper, the club in the Cafe Royale formally known as Elysium and Jay Kay is very relaxed, there's no sign of violence and he has brought along a bodyguard - either to protect himself or a member of the paparazzi! A few hours ago at the Grosvenor House Hotel the Q Awards took place and this is the official after-show party. The celebrity turnout for the shindig isn't the best, but at least we have managed to spot Mr. Jamiroquai himself! He asks us how we are and we have a chat about his pub which he has situated in the grounds of his house. As we start to leave his side the singer places a hand on our shoulder,
'Don't go punching any paparazzi tonight', he jokes.
'Relax', we tell him 'We're aren't that bloody stupid!'
If the truth be known, we were surprised to see him at the party in the first place as not only did Jamiroquai not win any awards - he wasn't even nominated! Maybe we had stepped into the wrong party!

The party itself was your standard affair, which in context is something not to criticize about. There was free beer and cocktail. Canapés which considered the vegetarians as well as those who wouldn't turn down the beef and chicken satays. The small tarts were tasty as well - we mean the dessert kind, not the types in short skirts!

Paper opened at the start of this year and is extremely welcoming. Once you have walked down the stairs the main bar is nested between two rooms. One the left side is a spacious area decorated in white with a 'garden arch' leading to comfy sofas and a few seats which have been built inside the wall giving the occupants a feel of privacy. This was where Jay Kay ended up. A selection of DJ's played in the corner for the Q party encouraging the guests to show off their drunken moves. The room on the right has a larger dance floor and a selection of booths to whisk your new found dancing party away for a more intimate conversation. Tonight's to remind guests that this was in fact a Q party the twenty covers which represented the magazine's current twentieth anniversary were displayed on the walls in their full glory.

Unfortunly the A list stars who had earlier attended the awards didn't make much of an appearance at the party. U2 had to jet off to Australia and as for the others? Well Girls Aloud, Sugarbabes and Noel Gallagher were spotted back at the Met Bar! The poor celebrity turnout back at the Q party would explain why there were only two photographers waiting outside. They may had been lucky and snapped Andy from Razorlight as we arrived late, but apart from that their film reel laid in tact. Unless Jay Kay ripped it to shreds later in another of his showbiz strops!
