Just imagine for 24 hours there was no war, no fighting and no Carol Voderman - it would be Peace for One Day, which just so happens to be the name of the benefit concert held last weekend at Brixton. Probably quite an ironic London location to be connected with the word 'Peace', but never the less the night organized by Peace One Day founder, Jeremy Gilley went ahead quite smoothly. Blended with video messages and live acts the night was compared by ex MTV host and comedian Richard Blackwood. The best joke of the night was on Blackwood when he pulled two kids out of the audience who turned out to be children of a member from ONE GIANT LEAP. They stayed with Blackwood all evening and asking him favors backstage such as - Can we dance on stage during your comparing? Damon Gough AKA BADLY DRAWN BOY is famously known as the most laid back artist in the history of um, laid back artists. However when the hat wearing little guy took the stage he really let off steam shouting 'stop fucking fighting, for fuck sake, it's not fuc...' As soon as he came off he came over to ABLE2UK, (we were watching from the wings) and apologized to us if we felt he went over the top! Upstairs in the dressing rooms corridor there was a small area filled with booze and a stack of Chinese takeaways for the artists and there friends. DAVE STEWART had the largest changing area and ended the live music strand of the evening with a fantastic live set of his own songs and cover versions. After the Eurythmic had finished all who were involved in the night antics took to the stage and sang along to 'War' (What is it good for...) and we manage to creep on-stage as well! A one minute silence followed to remember love ones we had lost and a bundle of balloons dropped from the Brixton ceiling. As Jeremy told the crowd he knows that his idea is very bold, although he just hopes that one day all fighting and hatred would stop. The audience listened and then applauded, they were to set an example for others to follow for the next 24 hours. However, after the gig we all pushed and fight each other out the way
at the tube station to catch the last train and all hell broke loose -
we managed a few minutes of peace what more do you want? |
