Parkinson Disease - This has nothing do to with an ostrich puppet attacking a famous TV interviewer back in the 80's (Ask your parents.) Back in 1817 an ill patient visited his doctor at his London clinic. After diagnosis the GP found that his patient had an undiscovered crippling disease. Feeling quite chuffed with his discovery the doc, a certain Dr. James Parkinson decided to name the condition after himself! But when his patient advised that 'James' was a pretty crappy name for a disability it was changed to 'Parkinson Disease!'. Jokes over it's time for a brief explanation, inside the brain there's something called the Substania Nigra which holds nerve cells which send messages to the brain so we can co-ordinate our movements properly. Parky sufferers have a lack of these cells. People who have the condition may shake, rattle along with slow movement (bradykinesia) and experience pain rolling around in bed and standing up. To simplify that - they Shake, Rattle and Roll! Normally old gits over the age of 50 will have the illness and the majority will be in blokes. Polio - You can buy these mints with holes at most supermarkets or newsagents. They come in a green packet and have been around for around for blooming years. Oh, sorry 'Polio'. Before we go any further can we just apoligise for probably the worse joke we have ever written on our website, it wasn't even funny. Look, we are going to start again, OK? Polio - Hopefully when you were a little baby you had a Polio vaccine as this disease is highly contagious. You can pick it up from contaminated food, dirty water and even swimming pools. Luckily, in most cases Polio causes very little or no effects, but 10% of cases can cause a deterioration in health. 5% of Polio cases cause 'abortive polio' for a couple of days after a few weeks since catching the disease the sufferer may acquire headaches, vomiting, sore throat, abdominal pain and a slight fever. Nonparalytic polio. nonparalytic polio is when the symptoms are much worse and muscles in the neck & limbs may become stiff. As you may have twigged, because there's nonparalytic polio, there's a paralytic kind. This is where other parts of the body may be effected. In most cases just one limb will be infected, but in some cases eating, breathing and bowel functions may be extremely difficult. This should improve in time, but lasting side effects can leave suffers crippled. The worse case scenario? You will die. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - This effects nearly everyone. If something witness a horrific incident such as 9/11, The Dunblane Shootings, A fatal car crash, Your SKY + box going up the creak etc. you will be in shock for a while. It could be days, weeks even a few months. But, if you you are never able to come to terms with the traumatic experiences this is called PTSD. This can relate to sexual/ physical abuse as a child or in adult life, such as being raped, break up or a death. LOOK, FOR F*CK SAKE, I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT ANYMORE, OK?
