Thornton knew she had the condition when she was 11 and tried to hide it from her friends and family. Tonight’s programme sees Kate sharing uncomfortable memoires discussing her illness with her best friends and family relatives.
She reveals how she attempted to cover up her sickness and bony figure and discovers the mental strain it caused to those around her.
The presenter suffered from Anorexia for four years and has kept her condition away from public attention for 25 years.
Highlighting the fact Anorexia has become more common over the years Kate finds out the latest facts and figures on the condition, in the hope more Anorexic teenagers will come to terms with their eating disorders.
People who have anorexia believe they are overweight and strive to be thinner by making drastic changes which can damage their bodies such as avoiding eating food or doing the complete opposite, binge eating so they make themselves sick.
If a person maintains such a radical eating behaviour their bones may weaken, they may contract kidney disease and there is a danger of heart failure.
The disease now affects 1 in 200 women and 1 in 2,000 men.
Kate Thornton – Anorexic: My Secret Past is on Channel 5 tonight (18 January) at 8pm.
