A recent film trailer for a forthcoming full length animation movie has caused offence to a disabled charity.

The Pirates! In An Adventure with Scientists! Is due out in March, the movie has been created by Aardman, the company behind the well loved Wallace & Gromit animations and follows the adventures of Pirate Captain battling it out to become Pirate of the year.

In the trailer we see a pirates arm fall off on a “leper-boat”, which has deeply upset representatives of the Lepra Health in Action charity.

Sir Christian Bonington is the charities president, he told BBC News: "It might make you laugh but leprosy stigma not only hurts, it is still forcing people to live a life on the fringes of society.

"Not only is the dropping off of body parts a total misnomer we have to ask ourselves, as we watch it uncomfortably, is it acceptable for us to be laughing at the millions of people who are disabled by leprosy?"

Another person who took offence to the trailer was Stephen Fry who called the scene a “cheap joke” via his Twitter account.

A spokesman for Aardman have said the company has listened carefully to the issue raised and is currently looking in to the situation.
