Unknown to Katie it wasn’t the first time her boyfriend carried out such a vicious attack, he had apparently served time behind bars before after throwing boiling hot water in a man’s face.
Along with the acid attack Lynch also cut Katie with a razor, stabbed her in the arm on several occasions and raped her.
During her stay in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Katie underwent surgery, surgeons removed all the skin from her face and literally rebuilt it! You may have witnessed this life changing operation in 2009 when Channel 4 aired a documentary entitled Katie: My Beautiful Face.
With Lynch and Sylvestre serving lifetime imprisonment Katie has been able to get on with her life. She is now behind her own charity, The Katie Piper Foundation which supports those who have faced similar ordeals to hers.
Four years on from her attack Katie is back on our television screens tonight fronting a new documentary. Katie: The Science of Seeing Again sees the model researching a new operation which attempts to restore her sight in her left eye.
The programme also continues the controversial debate as to whether human embryos should be used in finding ways to improve medicine.

Katie: The Science of Seeing Again is on Channel 4 tonight (7 February) at 9pm.
