She has offended animal rights activists by wearing an outfit made from meat, been 'scrambled' into an egg for an awards ceremony and added weight to rumours she has a few more inches between her legs but Lady Gaga’s most recent stir of controversy comes from an interview she gave to the NME where she used the term ‘Retard’.

The singer, responding to accusations her current single, ‘Born This Way’ is a rip-off of Madonna’s ‘Express Yourself’ said: "I am not stupid enough to put a record out and be that moronic. Why would I try to put a song out and think I'm getting one over on everybody? That's retarded.

Charity Mencap took offensive at the 25-year-old’s derogatory comment saying the word ‘Retard’ is a ‘slur’ towards those with learning difficulties.

However the charity failed to notice the support Gaga has given towards disabled people in the song itself, which has the uplifting lyrics...

“Whether life’s disabilities, Left you outcast, bullied, or teased, Rejoice and love yourself today, ‘Cause baby you were born this way.”

Lady Gaga released a statement saying: "I consider it part of my life's work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully. To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional."
