Chancellor George Osborne alongside Defence Secretary Philip Hammond have agreed that the tax from this year’s Military Wives single, ‘Whoever You Are’ will go straight to charity.
This year’s Christmas Number One (trust us, it will be) sees BBC 2’s Gareth Malone assemble a group of Military Wives to raise money for the Royal British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.
Yesterday, on Twitter, we brought to your attention the Military Wives were outselling the X Factor winners single 6-1. Later in the day news reached us that the bookies have stopped taking bets on who will top the festive chart on Christmas Day.
The record is expected to shift half a million copies before Christmas, making it the fastest selling single for six years.
Mind you, Osborne couldn’t really begrudge waiving the VAT as last week the government also decided to waive the taxes from ‘Cannonball’, the X Factor winning single by winners, Little Mix and allow the proceeds to go to the 'Together for Short Lives' charity.
It still yet to be decided if the government will allow the taxes from ‘Wombling Merry Christmas’ by The Wombles to go towards tiding up Wimbledon Common!
