It may sound crazy, but months and months ago mobile phones were designed just to make calls and send text messages.

The dark ages are well behind us and today’s mobile devices are more powerful then ever. They are also starting to change the way we lead our lifestyle and over in Barcelona right now the Mobile World Congress is revealing new and exciting gadgets which hope to give strong competition to the phone you are probably currently reading this article on.

This years MWC is only a day old, but the past twenty four hours has already showcased two ground breaking mobile phones; the first being the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play. Initially dubbed as the PSP Phone this handheld device comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera which can also stream HD videos.

The initial sell for the XPERIA is the gaming opportunities, the mobile which was premiered to the American audience through a television commercial on Superbowl Sunday, is slighter wider than the iPhone. The device is equipped with a sliding undercarriage and resembles the face buttons of a Playstation controller. In other words, if you have serve motor dexterity problems this phone probably isn't the best buy for you.

As far as the gaming side goes the first series of thumb-aching activity includes Crash Bandicoot, Asphalt 6, Star Battalion, FIFA 10, Tetris, Bruce Lee and Dungeon Defenders: Second Wave. Although we have been promised 50 titles will be available when the phone is officially launched.

Gaming wasn't the only gimmick which wowed guests at the MWC on Valentines Day. The recent 3D phenomenon which resurfaced last year on the big screen and has now found its way into the living rooms of the rich will soon be available in the palm of your hand thanks to the new gem from LG.

LG, who are also bringing out a 3D Tablet, have told users that they will be able to film in 3D and upload their Spielberg pieces of work directly onto YouTube.

Despite us, along with others, referring to this new wave of technology as a gimmick head of LG's mobile UK division, Jim Michel had this to say about the phone...

"It is definitely not a gimmick. More films are being sold in 3D and it is great to squeeze that onto a small screen,"

Whatever next? A mobile which picks up good reception when you need to make a vital phone call?
