It’s often said that a man’s best friend is his canine companion and for some children in Oxford this certainly does seem to be the case.

The Parents Autism Workshops and Support, cleverly abbreviated to ‘PAWS’ based in Banbury are currently running workshops to show how dogs can help young people with autism.

Katie Bristow-Wade is a dog behaviour expert; she explains how a dog can show the love and affection to autistic children by sleeping at the end of their bed and resting on a child’s lap to calm down their anxiety.

The dogs can also encourage children to carry out day-to-day routines by having their hair brushed and having their teeth cleaned. Although when nature calls its hoped children will stick to a toilet basin opposed to the nearest lamp post!

PAWS workshops also offer advice for families contemplating buying a dog for themselves or someone with a disability.
