A ROYAL FLUSH.

Kings Of Leon play to 60,000 fans in London.

Concert: 30th June 2010 - London Hyde Park // Published: 6th July 2010

The last time we saw Hyde Park so busy was five years ago when Sir Bob Geldof rounded up every musician under the sun for the historic Live8 concert. Today the father of Peaches and Pixie, the two liggers who even put us to shame, has returned to London's Royal Park although this time Bob has a much more relaxing itinerary. Today the Boomtown Rat is guests of Live Nation, the promoter behind this extraordinaire mind-blowing concert which will see the Followill brothers earn their rightful knighthood in realms of musical legends. There will be more Heat magazine star-spotting to come, but before we grab for our autograph books there's a concert going on and, as you have probably gathered, it's a pretty bloody good one at that.

They kick off with 'Crawl', they continue with 'Taper Jean Girl', they send out their invites to 'My Party' and we R.S.V.P by singing back the lyrics to 'Be Somebody' and this is just the start of the band's largest solo concert on this English Civil land. OK, they extended their own Royal family summoning the likes of The Drums and The Black Keys to support them and even rounded up relatively unknown acts (The Features, The Whigs) to entertain the early birds, but today, or should we say 'Only By The Night' belongs to Nashville’s' finest rock band, Kings Of Leon.

'I know we have just started, but we are having the best time', Caleb tells the crowd. It's a welcome return for the band after their dismal performance at Reading Festival last August. This is a band that cherishes their own audience as opposed to pissed-up crowds who retreat back to tents after watching which ever band follows the band before them.

'Molly's Chambers' leads us down the spiral staircase of the Kings Discography tunnel which is layered with tracks such as 'Fans' and 'Revelry'. But what's that we see peering up above us? It's a plethora of unheard tracks bolted behind the dungeon door guarded by those pesky record company suits who forbid the band from playing these new tracks for commonwealth ears. No matter, as Caleb tells us...

"Since we saw you guys last we went and made a record. That's what we put a lot of work into. Just yesterday some people at the record label got to hear a couple of songs from it. I don't know if they want us to play a bunch of new songs but I think, 'Fuck it' – we're gonna do it!"

And so Hyde Park hears the secret delights of 'Southbound', 'Immortals' and 'Radioactive'.

Amongst all this hysteria there was more frenzied excitement occurring just behind the disabled platform as Lord Of The Rings star, Orlando Bloom showed his face on the VIP grandstand before being whisked off to the side of stage after being recognised by a horde of screaming fans. Howard from Take That remained inconspicuous from just a few seats away.

From Hobbits to Pixies as the band covered Where Is My Mind? just before they delved into cover-version territory Caleb found his own common sense by thanking the crowd for buying the tickets and reminded us how much he loved being 'home'.

'Sex On Fire' continued their one night stand in Hyde Park which was ideal foreplay for 'Knocked Up' which banged a play just a few tracks later.

The careers on the disabled platform probably had sunken hearts when their invalid companions attempted to murmur the lyrics to 'Use Somebody' and the band left their personalised mark by signing off with 'Black Thumbnail'.

Until the Kings return or Bob Geldof decides to invite his facebook friends to another 'event' Hyde Park won't be seeing a momentous turn-out like the one we witnessed today. Kings of Leon - You have our Royal seal of approval!
