BERLIN SPECIAL

MTV EMA's 2009

MTV takes over The German Capital.

Published: 12th November 2009

Our difficulty with this review is that we aren't too sure where to start. Do we begin by telling you that the first EMA's were held right here in Berlin back in 1994? Or that the Brandenburg Gate was the setting for Irish legends U2's live performance for this years awards? There again do we kick off our report from 02 World - the chosen venue for this years award winning extravaganza?

Another problem we are encountering is that we are well aware that the awards were watched by an estimated one billion people which by default means that most of our readers watched the music spectacular therefore a bog standard review detailing the night’s events is as pointless as Robbie Williams being asked to perform at the ceremony. The star 'turned down' the invitation and a press release told the media world that the struggling comeback star had other 'commitments'.

The absence of Williams didn't matter on the night. As the stoke on Trent star peaked at just number nine back in the UK charts acts such as Green Day, Leeona Lewis and the Foo Fighters assumed pole position playing memorable live sets in front of the packed O2 World.

Other live performances came from Tokio Hotel (They are bloody massive in Europe), Beyonce, Jay Z and Shakira. Jay Z actually joined U2 for the final send-off over at the Brandenburg Gate which took place just a couple of hours before the awards went out live at 9pm.

Katy Perry was given the job of hosting the show for a second year on the trot and invited the cameras into her Kitty Katy Club where she gave us covers of The Black Eyed Peas 'I've Got A Feeling' & Lady Gaga's 'Pokerface' in a Cabaret styled setting.

Every good award show requires a bunch of hosts to hand out gongs. Before we trail through the guest list for this years hand chosen celebrities don't be too surprised if a few names don't register. We were in Germany after all. OK, the presenters were... Asia Argento, Backstreet Boys, Bar Refaeli,Batista, Brody Jenner, David 'Loudest scream of the night' Hasslehoff, Jean Reno, Jesse Metcalfe, Jonas Brothers, Joss Stone, Juliette Lewis, Lil Kim, Miranda Cosgrove and Wladimir Klitschko.

For some unknown reason the Free Your Mind award, a special prize which aims to 'highlight humanitarian issues and encourage freedom from all kinds of intolerance and prejudice' wasn't featured on the show itself. However a dinner was held in Berlin on the Sunday after the awards. At the event Mikhail Gorbachev was presented with this year’s special prize celebrating the former leader’s involvement in bringing down the Berlin Wall twenty years ago.
