THE
WHEELCHAIR THEY WANT BANNED!
There's
something about that chair pictured above which people don't particularly
like. Have a look at it and see if you can guess what it is.
Is it
because the wheelchair is meant to be for a first time user and doesn't
match the standards for a novice who needs it? No.
Could
it be that a recent injured person needs to sit at a higher rear seat
and the chair's adjustable set doesn't work? Or that the Colors In Motion
company which manufacturers work in relation with doesn't apply the right
shades? No.
OK, in
that case it has to be something to do with the rigid axle tube which
increases the support which also comes the middle frame contour? Wrong
again.
Apparently
all three points mentioned above are faultless. The reason for the current
uproar in the UK for this American development in the name. Which is quite
simply, 'Spazz'!
Yes, it's true the wheelchair is hilariously called Spazz, but boring
old goody goodies at organisations such as Scope couldn't really see the
funny side to it. Margie Woodward is the spokeswoman for Scope, which
incidentally used to be called The Spastic Society. Margie said,
"The term spazz is derogatory for spastic. We stopped using even
that term years ago because of the connotations. (Yes but it took you
years to change it! - Editor.)
We were quite alarmed when this wheelchair appeared. I understand
it is a good wheelchair but we cant go along with the name. If it
carries on, it wont be long before children are calling each other
spazzo in the playground again.
We admit that giving a disabled school kid a Spazz is like giving George
Best a pint of larger - it can lead to humiliation in the playground.
But for adults the humor is there. Our only complaint is that the name
(and this is quite funny) is actually printed on each side of the chair
itself. Mind you, they couldn't really quite fit the word 'Retarded' on,
,maybe Crip would had been better as it would have taken up even less
room.
You can even spazz up your spazz wheelchair choosing your preferred color
and paying for an Aluminum Padded Arm Rest.
We would love to hear your views on the Spazz, is it offensive or is it
funny? Please email us and
express your spazzy thoughts!
