Terrorist heaven, The London Underground System has another fear this year. Apart from being a great little target for the illegal immigrants to blow up the underground London Labyrinth of tunnels and fast speeding trains could be prosecuted under the Disability Discrimination Act.

As any loyal ABLE2UK reader should know by now by October 2004 all public places must have access for people with disabilities. So, as the London Underground is a public place by law the six in seven stations which aren't wheelchair friendly require some immense adjustments. Although this ain't gonna be cheap! In a matter of fact the total cost could be up to £1 billion, a sum which even Terry Wogan and Pudsy Bear couldn't pull no matter how crippled the kids are on the Children In Need films!

It's vital for the London Underground to get on track and start making the necessary requirements because from October disabled people can start to sue if plans haven't been kicked into action!

Somebody who gives advice on public transport access for people with disabilities is Alice Maynard who said,

"We have been waiting an awfully long time for wheelchair access to public transport and it is coming very, very slowly. "I expect there will be individual
disabled people who want to take action. And there will also be organizations for disabled people who are prepared to back individuals to take action against transport providers."

100 stations are set to be wheelchair accessible before 2020. Lets just hope that no disabled terrorist thinks about smuggling a bomb in hidden in their wheelchair though!

Until 2020 disabled users of the Underground will have to be careful of not only minding the gap but also picking which tube stations they stop at. Fearnot though because us at ABLE2UK bring you the ultimate guide to which tube stations have disabled access. Just click on the link on the left and plan your tube route around London.
