46664

It's 1962 and prisoner number 46664 is spending his first year in the notorious Robben Island Prison, a small island near Cape Town. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment and has no idea what his future has for him. 4664 was moved from Robben Island twice to two other prisons, first to Pollsmoor Prison, actually in Cape Town itself and then to Victor Verster Prison near Paarl. On 11th February 1990, the prisoner was released and was no longer referred to as a five-digit number, he was Nelson. Nelson Mandela

Before he was released rock stars united to play a huge stadium concert in 1988 to bring awareness to Mandela in the hope for an imminent release. Artists such as Dire Straits, Sting, George Michael and Eric Clapton grouped together to perform at this historic concert which ended with that annoying song you can't get out of your head, The Cheeky Girls 'Touch My Bum'. No sorry, wrong gig, the song was 'Free Nelson Mandela' and two years later he was.

Now, in 2003 Mandela is one of the main organisers behind a massive charity concert later this year. The Nelson Madela Charity Concert will take place at Green Point Stadium, Cape Town on 29th November. Bono and Dave Stewart have worked together on this huge event and with top acts including, The Corrs, Queen, Ms Dynamite and Beyoncé Knowles they plan to raise a stack load of cash for AIDS in Africa. MTV will globally show the 3 hour concert on World AIDS Day (1st December).

Money will be raised by people phoning a premium rate number worldwide which includes Mandela's prison number, 46664. By making that call you will be able to hear messages from celebrities such as Beyonce, Robert De Niro, Britney Spears, Pink and David Bowie you will also be adding to a petition to encourage world leaders fund more projects for AIDS.

Some of the worlds biggest rock stars have spoken out supporting this cause..

"We have a wonderful opportunity to raise money and awareness through global telephone networks and the Internet. It is so simple.” Dave Stewart

“46664 is a very exciting and rather noble project. AIDS is the most important issue facing Africa today and through awareness we can do something about it. Give one minute of your life to stop AIDS and add to the
snowball of awareness.” Roger Taylor

“We are aiming to lay the foundation for a campaign that will achieve a massive kick in awareness. It’s early days – nothing of this is guaranteed to be within our power to achieve. But we are all excited and hopeful.” Brian May
