A THIRD DIMENSION.

Nintendo launch the new 3DS.

Published: 17th June 2010

Over in LA the E3 games show has been the obvious benchmark for the three major gaming companies to launch their latest console in time for this years Christmas sales.

Yesterday Nintendo showed off their 3DS. As the first two characters in its name suggest, the new flashy console takes gamers into 3D territory and unlike your recent trips to the cinema there's no need to wear glasses.

Of course the complexity of how this baby works is far too in-depth to explain in this article, although it has something to do with a gadget called parallax barrier.

OK, now you want to know what a parallax barrier actually is don't ya? Well, it has something to do with having a second LCD screen positioned over the main viewing panel, this conjures up a series of lines across the screen therefore allowing gamers view another set of pixels which 'apparently' gives the 3D effect.

The only drawback from this is that the gamer must be positioned directly in front of the screen as if viewed from an angle the 3D effect won't work. However seeing as the 3DS will be a handheld console there's little cause for alarm.

If 3D isn't your thing Nintendo have added a device which enables users to increase or decrease the 3D depth. In turn this can switch off the parallax barrier all together leaving you with a 2D image.

Another bonus for the 3DS is that the gadget is an always-on wi-fi connection which will ensure that game levels and updates will automatically be fed to the users.

The first game to be released will be Kid Icarus Uprising with titles such as Resident Evil Revelations, Batman, Assassin's Creed Lost Legacy and Metal Gear Solid to follow.

THE MOST PATHETIC FACT EVER:

The 3DS screen is 3.53 inches the same amount of rainfall Southwestern Montana experienced in 1934.
